About Rick

Service, discipline, and instruction

Shihan Rick Donkel brings decades of military and law enforcement experience to martial arts and self-defense education. He served 20 years on active duty in the U.S. Army Military Police, with assignments in criminal investigation, physical security, and Central and South America. During Operation Just Cause in Panama, he earned the Joint Service Commendation Medal.

Rick continued serving in North Carolina law enforcement and retired in 2021. He now draws on that experience when teaching martial arts and self-defense: preparation, awareness, sound judgment, and responsible action are as important as physical technique.
